Shrewsbury Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski has lost his place on the prestigious Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee after two years.

Kawczynski, who was deputy chair of the committee in the last parliament, failed to get himself re-elected as a member after the June election. Members of select committees are chosen by backbench MPs of their own party in a secret ballot.

He has been a member of the committee since 2015.

Kawczynski has used his platform as an MP to support unpopular and often brutal regimes including Saudi Arabia where he made an all-expenses-paid trip in April this year according to the parliamentary Register of Members’ Interests.

The four day trip was funded by the Shura Council of Saudi Arabia to the tune of £6700. It’s purpose is stated as “to strengthen British – Saudi Arabian diplomatic relations”.

Saudi Arabia is considered to be one of the most regressive regimes in the world. All women have to have a male “guardian” and need his permission to do everything from marrying to travelling to getting a job to opening a bank account. They are not allowed to drive.

Saudi Arabia is currently leading a bombing campaign against rebels in Yemen and has been accused of attacking civilians, including children, and causing hundreds of child deaths.
