The Women’s Forum meetings are held once a month usually on the 2nd Saturday at the Hub, Riverside Centre, Shrewsbury, SY1 1PJ on the ground floor. Maggie Hudson is the secretary of the WF. Here are some of the Women’s Forum’s recent activities.
Help for Refugees in Shropshire
Fund raising, and provision of goods for Christmas hampers for the Syrian refugees that have been given homes in the area. Amanda Jayne Jones, who runs the Facbook page “Shropshire Supports Refugees”, came and gave the group a talk last year.
The Women’s Forum hosted an afternoon tea which raised £500, and the forum donated a sum of money to Amanda.
Support for the NHS
The Women’s Forum supports “Shropshire Defend our NHS”. Members give up their time to man stalls at the top of pride hill to talk to the public and to get signatures on the ongoing petition. The next event is a public meeting called “Our Local NHS CRISIS, What Crisis?” Friday, 7/4/17 at 7.30-9.30pm
Support for WASPI
We support WASPI, and on lnternational Woman’s Day in March we helped to organise and man a stall in the square, run by Shropshire WASPI members, handing out leaflets and talking to members of the public to enhance awareness about this subject.
Communication of Values to the press
We write letters to the local press (the Chronicle and the Shropshire Star) every month. Subjects have recently included.
- Syrian refugees
- Our local and national health service.
- Are you on the electoral register?
Members have also written to our MP concerning the child refugees, who are alone and are still in France.
In April the Women’s Forum are concentrating on the local elections and raising funds to help support our women councillors who are already in situ, and those that are running as prospective councillors.
After the elections the Women’s Forum will be discussing the Annual Labour Conference that is going to be held in Brighton.
The Women’s Forum support all of the above, throughout the year.
The Women’s Forum also arrange other speakers to come along and speak to the group, as well as asking for updates from speakers who have spoken to us over the last year or so.
